Professional Teeth Bleaching

Tooth bleaching is a chemical process used to lighten the color o fteeth. The procedure can be performed entirely in the dentist's office in one or two visits. The dentist may first apply a regular abrasive cleaning of the teeth. This may be followed by a bleaching process on the stained tooth or teeth.

Severely stained teeth may require the use of a special whitening gel activated by a laser. The dentist will carefully lighten the tooth until a near-perfect color match with your other teeth can be achieved.

No matter which method is chosen, how white your teeth will get really depends on what color they were when you started the process, and the  source of the discoloration.

Brown/yellow teeth (which is often the result of superficial staining caused by smoking, or coffee/tea) will usually get whiter. Grey teeth (caused by pigment deep inside the tooth) will lighten less, or sometimes not at all. Exact results cannot be guaranteed.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has given a seal of approval on some teeth whitening products. You should consult with your dentist regarding which products are most effective and safe to use.

As a general rule, the most effective and safest methods of tooth bleaching are those that are dentist-supervised or dentist-administered.
